After being awarded a doctorate in cryogenic engineering at Oxford, Tim Cook joined the Oxford Instruments Group (a spinout company from the University in 1959) in 1975. During his 12 years with them the group’s turnover grew from £1m to £100m. In 1983 Tim was appointed Managing Director of their subsidiary Oxford Analytical Instruments.
After two more Managing Director appointments Tim set up as a private investor in 1990 and was founding Managing Director of Oxford Semiconductor and Oxford Asymmetry, a spinout from the University of Oxford which was floated in 1998 and was recently sold for over £340 million.
In 1997 Tim Cook was appointed Managing Director of Isis Innovation, the University of Oxford’s technology transfer company. Since then Isis has recruited 34 staff and negotiated over 100 option and licence agreements. In the last six years Isis has established 40 new spin-out companies from the University with a current estimated value of £200 million.
In addition to his work at Isis, Tim Cook is advising the universities of Sheffield on their spinout programmes and working with the Qatar Foundation on the establishment of a new University and Science Park.
