Kerena is the Head of Intellectual Property and Legal Services at the University of Bath. She acts as a legal adviser in relation to all matters pertaining to research and its commercialisation at the University. This includes negotiating and drafting Sponsored Research Agreements, Secondment Agreements, Collaborations, Link Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements and Studentships.
In relation to commercialisation the focus is on delivering technologies and businesses emerging from the University into the market. This entails working with technology transfer colleagues in assessing inventions and business ideas and formulating and implementing commercial strategies for their development.
Legal work arising in the commercialisation context includes consideration of Intellectual Property Rights and tax issues, instructing patent agents, drafting Consultancy Agreements (for external advice), heading up the negotiation of heads of terms and drafting Licence Agreements and spin-out documentation, including Subscription and Shareholders Agreements, Directors' Service Contracts, Board Minutes etc. Further advice is also given to the University Executive in relation to strategic partnering initiatives of the University.
Kerena completed a BA (Hons) at University College London before attending the College of Law, completing first the Common Professional Examination and then the Law Society Finals. Following Articles at Jaques and Lewis (now Eversheds) she worked in the City of London specialising in Company Commercial Work with the particular interests in mergers and acquisitions and venture capital. Prior to joining the University she returned to her native Bath where she worked in the locality for a number of years as a Company Commercial Specialist.
