John Murphy
John Murphy spent the early part of his career as an academic at the universities of Sheffield and Aston, lecturing Applied Mathematics and Numerical Analysis and carrying out research on the numerical modelling of Atmospheric and Ionospheric Processes with frequent visits to the Centre for Space Sciences, University of Texas at Dallas. He joined Sowerby Research Centre, British Aerospace (now BAE SYSTEMS) in 1985 and
- Established and headed up the new Department of Computational Engineering covering areas such as stealth, electromagnetic hazards, antenna design, structural technology, impact and penetration, crashworthiness, blast protection, occupant safety, aerodynamics, aero-acoustics, acoustics, materials processing and featuring multi-disciplinary simulation and high performance computing.
- Established a new capability in Electromagnetic Modelling
- Managed a number of European funded research programs
- Represented BAE SYSTEMS on European Committees and Working Groups
- Was appointed Honorary Professor at University of Swansea
He has been the author of a number of papers and presentations including invited papers in areas of Simulation and Design and Computational Engineering. Building on his careers in academia and industry, in his current corporate role as Head of University Partnerships, he is forging stronger links between the academic sector and BAE SYSTEMS to more effectively address requirements in Research and Technology, Training and Education, and Recruitment. Through the BAE SYSTEMS University Partnership Steering Group, which he chairs, the company has established a University Partnership Programme to interface with the UK and global university sector.
