John McQuillian is Director of MerseyBIO the integrated Life Science knowledge transfer, business start-up, incubation and cluster development organisation for Merseyside. The UK life science industry is recognised as one of the world's most advanced, second only to the US in scale and Europe's most entrepreneurial. Merseyside possesses a significant cluster of life science research, clinical activity and established and developing businesses. Its strengths and focus for growth include biomedical biotechnology, the prevention and control of infectious diseases, biopharmaceutical manufacturing and ground-breaking medical technology in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
John established MerseyBIO in 2000. Previously he spent 11 years with Applied Biosystems, a San Francisco company that created the principal tools which enabled the realisation and completion of Human Genome sequencing project. In 1997 he formed his own biotechnology start-up business in Cambridge, Cambridge Molecular, which he sold to a UK FTSE 250 company at the end of 1999.
