James Abell is a biology graduate and chartered accountant. He trained and qualified with KPMG and worked with them in London and Toronto between 1983-1993. From 1994-1996 he worked as a consultant for the Medical Research Council where he advised the founders of start-up biotechnology companies. He was a Director of Cambridge Genetics and from 1995 to 1998 was CFO of Prolifix.
In 1998, he joined Abingworth Management Ltd as CFO and was appointed a director of the firm in 1999. At Abingworth he handles finance and administration as well as investment matters, focusing on start-up companies. Since joining Abingworth he has held interim executive roles at a number of university spinout companies, including Astex Technology, Solexa, Lorantis and Chroma Therapeutics.
