Tara is as a solicitor, specialising in all aspects of intellectual property (“IP”) acquisition, protection and commercialisation, including research contracts and arrangements. Her experience spans all industries, and includes an understanding of the issues which are relevant both to universities and to private industry.
After qualifying, Tara worked in the IP Department of a leading UK law firm for two years, and then the IP Department of Matheson Ormsby Prentice Solicitors, Dublin, for four years. Since June 2003, Tara has been working as a consultant to the Lifesciences & Food Commercialisation Group (EI Bio) of Enterprise Ireland, and also at Trinity College Dublin, advising on various legal and policy issues relating to research funding, research arrangements, IP acquisition, protection and commercialisation. Tara now works at NovaUCD, the innovation and technology transfer centre at UCD.
Tara assisted the Irish ACSTI task force in respect of the National Code of Practice for Managing IP from Publicly Funded Research (January 2004), and the National Code of Practice for Managing and Commercialising IP from Public-Private Collaborative Research (November 2005). She acted as Rapporteur for the European Commission CREST Expert Group on IPR and Research in 2004, and for the Thematic Session on Optimising the Mechanisms for Technology Sharing, held as part of the Dutch EU Presidency (October 2004). Tara is a registered trade mark agent (1994), and has an MSc in Economic Policy Studies (The Policy Institute, Trinity College Dublin, 2005).
