Simon Cutler

Simon Cutler graduated from the University of Birmingham with a BSc in Biological Sciences in 1992. His final year research project was in fungal molecular genetics, which eventually proved to be the subject of his PhD, also at Birmingham, that followed.

On completing his PhD in 1995, Simon joined Horticulture Research International as a postdoctoral researcher investigating the genetics and molecular biology of the button mushroom. He later returned to Birmingham to complete a second postdoctoral position with Zeneca (now Syngenta), AgrEvo and IACR-Long Ashton.

After a number of years at the bench, Simon decided to pursue a career in scientific management at BBSRC’s Swindon Office. He joined the then Science and Technology Group as a Programme Manager in 2000. Subsequently, he spent a year as the Chief Executive’s Science Liaison Officer.

At the beginning of 2003, Simon joined BBSRC’s Business and Innovation Unit as Innovation Programme Manager. Amongst a large number of other activities, he is now responsible for managing the Young Entrepreneurs Scheme, Industry Interchange Programme, Modular Training for Industry, and Enterprise Fellowships, further details of which can be found at www.bbsrc.ac.uk/business.

Another reason for joining the BBSRC was to discourage family and friends buying him any more ornamental mushrooms as presents.
