Joanna has been joint head of the Legal Services Office of the University of Cambridge since March 2005. The Legal Services Office evolved from a small group of lawyers, working under Joanna's supervision within the University's Research Services Division. At that time, the group's work concentrated on providing legal support to the University's collaboration and technology transfer offices. It now consists of seven solicitors who provide legal advice to all areas of the University.
Before joining the University, Joanna worked in private practice first with Eversheds in Birmingham and Nottingham, practising commercial and competition law. On relocating to British Columbia, Canada, she re-qualified to become a solicitor and barrister and practised corporate finance with a large law firm in Vancouver before returning to the UK in 1998.
Joanna's legal work for the University now involves dealing with a large range of commercial contracts but she still works closely with the Research Services Division and was a member of the Lambert working group on collaborative research agreements. She also works with Cambridge Enterprise Ltd., the University's wholly-owned subsidiary and technology transfer office.
